John Lennon’s ex-wife letter realises $31,000

A 1976 open letter from John Lennon to his ex-wife Cynthia realised $30,621 in a major sale at RR Auction yesterday.

The sardonically worded text was written in response to a tell-all article Cynthia had published on the breakdown of their marriage.

John Lennon Cynthia

John Lennon was annoyed by a tell-all article Cynthia published in a magazine

It’s addressed to the magazine that published Cynthia’s article and was sold alongside a handwritten letter asking the editor to publish it as a response.

It’s unclear whether the letter did go to print, but given its meandering content it seems unlikely.

Lennon writes, in part: “As you and I well know, our marriage was over long before the advent of L.S.D. or Yoko Ono…and that’s reality!

“…I don’t blame you for wanting to get away from your ‘Beatle’ past.

“But if you are serious about it, you should try to avoid talking to and posing for magazines and newspapers! We did have some good years, so dwell on them for a change…”

A rare signed photograph of reggae superstar Bob Marley realised $7,136.

It’s inscribed in blue ballpoint “Jah, Bob Marley” and dates to the mid-1970s.

Marley’s signature is extremely rare. He signed few autographs and died aged just 36 in 1981.

Also included was a signed photo of Aston 'Family Man' Barrett, bassist in Marley’s legendary backing band the Wailers.
