Paul McCartney wrote to Prince requesting help to set up the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts

McCartney wrote the letter asking for help to establish the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts.

The Beatle opened the institute in 1996, following a successful fundraising campaign.

He was inspired after watching the 1980 musical Fame, about the New York High School for the Performing Arts.

He writes: "A donation from you would be a great boost to the project, and I know your involvement in some way, would be a thrill for everyone concerned.

"Hope you didn't mind me writing this, it's so long since I've written letters I feel like I'm back at school myself. Anyway, one of these days you'll have to come and teach a class some moves!!"

It's unknown whether Prince did make a donation, but he was well known for his generosity and commitment to philanthropy.

The value of Prince's memorabilia has grown dramatically following his death.

Earlier this year the jacket he wore in Purple Rain sold for $96,000 at Profiles in History, while his iconic Yellow Cloud guitar made $137,000.

As one of the last surviving Beatles, items associated with Paul McCartney are also very sought after.

A set of doodles he produced showing the other members of the band realised £15,000 ($23,000) last year.
