1863 24c blackish violet to headline Wade Saadi collection at Siegel

An 1863 24c blackish violet with a seven bar grid cancel is to feature in Robert A Siegel's June 25 sale with a $22,500 estimate.

The lot will headline the 'A Portion of the Wade Saadi Struck on Stamps Collection', which mainly consists of early US issues.

The 1863 blackish violet displays good margins and a proof-like impression

Very few used examples of the 1863 24c blackish violet are known to exist (around 56 in total - some of which appear on covers) making it one of the rarest shades in the entire 1861-1866 series.

The example offered is described as having a proof-like impression with good margins and a neat cancellation strike.

Other lots in the sale include a 90c Blue with what appears to be a Baltimore circular datestamp. The high-value issue was first released in 1860 and was used primarily in international postage.

The scarcity of used examples is a result of the invalidation of stamps in the southern US states in the early weeks of the US civil war, which began in 1861.

Another example, featuring a New York Ocean Mail datestamp, is valued at $11,000. A further example marked with a rectangle grid fancy cancel carries an identical estimate.
