Christie's completed their Travel, Science and Natural History auction yesterday, April 6, 2011 and as we mentioned there was a highlight for space collectors: two fragments of the Argentine Campo del Cielo meteorite.
The smaller piece was listed at £500-800 (up to $1,300) and a larger piece 10 inches (25cm) wide at £3,000-£5,000 ($4,866-$8,110). The meteorite is classified as an octahedrite - a type of iron meteorite.
Substantial iron meteorites tend to hold their value as supply is extremely limited, so they can be used as investments.

Campo del Cielo, or Field of the Sky, meteorites have provided some notable sales down the years for space investors, including a 161kg piece which sold at Bonhams for $91,375 in 2006.
Whilst not quite rising to those heights, the spacerocks certainly didn't disappoint, with the larger piece bringing a £6,875 ($11,069) and even the smaller fragment achieving £1,188 ($1,912) - an indication that meteorites can sometimes be lucrative investments for the likes of Darryl Pitt and Rob Elliot.
