'Mind boggling' aviation collection for sale

The collection of a lifelong dedicated aviation and militaria enthusiast will auction at a sale of fine art, antiques and other collectibles held by Ewbank Clarke Gammon Wellers, on March 17.

Collector Geoff Stanton reportedly lived and breathed aeroplanes, a passion inherited from his father who was an employee at Westland Aerospace in East Cowes, UK.

According to the auction house's press release, Stanton's home was packed full of aeronautica in a "mind boggling" collection of astonishing depth - including two mannequins in full uniform to greet visitors as they entered.

USAAF and RAF uniforms, sheepskin jackets, helmets boots and goggles, World War cockpit instruments, models and wartime art will feature among the lots.

The biggest item of the sale, however, is a pilot's ejection seat, thought to be from a Gloster Meteor jet.

Although the item's provenance remains a mystery, the pilot's restraining straps - manufactured by the GQ Parachute Co of Woking, dated September 1952 - will be of great interest to collectors.

Medals, badges and pins, old manuscripts including logbooks, manuals parts and tools, and models of aircraft from varying eras will also feature in the auction.

Stanton passed away after suffering a heart attack in 2007, leaving behind him legacy of respect among other militaria collectors.

Testament to the dedication and efforts of a remarkable collector, Ewbank Clarke Gammon Wellers' sale promises to be an unmissable event for aviation and militaria collectors, investors and buffs.
