1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card sets new record

A 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card has sold for $400,950 at Goldin Auctions.

The lot beat the previous $382,500 record for a '52 Mantle Topps, set at Heritage Auctions last week for a card with an identical grade, by 4.8%.

Both cards had an identical PGA grade of NM 8.

The auction house explained: "Only in the finest specimens of this card do the item's physical details coalesce with the early Mantle's remarkable evocative pull to yield a truly irresistible, magnetic collectible.

"The offered piece is clearly one of the collecting industries finest, and it thus inspires only the most positive feelings within any hobbyist who views it."

Other lots in the sale included a 1905 Christy Matthewson game used bat, which sold for $218,700.

Matthewson (1880-1925) was a legendary pitcher for the New York Giants. He served in the US army's chemical weapons division in the first world war and was killed after accidently inhaling gas.

The bat is both the only known Matthewson-used bat on the market, and the oldest World Series bat ever sold. That has led Goldin to describe it as "the single most important game used bat ever offered for sale."
