The baseball legend put the items up for auction as part of a collection of career memorabilia, which raised $1.7m in total. The uniform led bids in the November 9 sale, realising $550,000.

The 1960 World Series saw the National League's Pittsburgh Pirates face the mighty New York Yankees of the American League. In the bottom of the ninth in Game 7, Mazeroski became the first person to hit a game-ending home run to secure the championship, despite the Pirates being outplayed, outscored and outhit.

The uniform was followed by the bronze baseball bat that Mazeroski used to hit the home run, which sold for $280,000. Also selling were his 1960 cleats, which made $85,000, and the Most Outstanding Player award he received following the series at $36,000.

Heritage Auctions also held its sports memorabilia auction on November 7-9, starring memorabilia from the collection of Stan Musial.
