Billy Casper's 1966 US Open trophy makes $95,000

Billy Casper's 1966 US Open trophy realised $95,176 at Green Jacket Auctions on December 13.

Casper achieved a phenomenal victory to claim the trophy, making up a seven stroke deficit to Arnold Palmer on the back nine on Sunday, before winning the following day's 18 hole playoff.

One of the sport's most underrated figures, Casper achieved 51 PGA victories over the course of his storied career.

His 1970 Masters Tournament winner's trophy realised $88,809.

Green Jacket comments: "To our knowledge, this is the first original Masters Tournament trophy to be offered for public sale, though we do know of one that traded hands for a rather lofty sum in a private transaction."

Casper was a generous man as well as a formidable sportsman, as the auction house explains: "Billy Casper first reached out to us in early 2014 about what to do with his collection.

"When we promised him a sizable six figure cash advance, he told us to come visit him - and to bring our checkbook.

"We then flew out to Utah to meet with Billy, his wife Shirley, and several of his children.

"After agreeing to a plan for Casper's collection, we pulled out that checkbook to write one of our largest checks ever… and Billy Casper told us to give the entire amount to charity."

We have this superb sun visor signed by Tiger Woods for sale.
