€80k Chinese sceptre to sell in France

The leading French auctioneer Hôtel Drouot will hold a sale of art from the Far East, today (December 16).

Estimated at €60k-80k

A major highlight in the sale will be an 18th century Chinese sceptre from the Quian Long period.

Made from celadon nephrite jade and streaked with rust, it will go under the hammer estimated at €60,000-80,000.

The sceptre is marked with a distinctive decoration of bats, peaches and lemons.

The other side of the handle bears an inscription including the term "Ruyi", meaning ceremonial sceptre in Chinese Buddhism, or a talisman.

Overall, the piece itself measures 48.5cm, according to Hôtel Drouot.

It will auction alongside a beautiful and rare set of ivories from the Ming period, representing Taoist sages like Lao Tzu in various traditional styles.
