The 9th century gravestone, dating to the time of Alfred the Great, brought £4,300 ($6,521).

It originates from a part of Derbyshire then known as Danelaw, which was controlled by Danish Vikings and adhered to their laws.

The remarkable find was discovered concealed under cardboard and garden tools in a garage. The owner said he had bought it at auction soon after it was unearthed during road construction in the first half of the 20th century.
