$31,700 diamond ring turns heads at Bonhams' jewellery auction

Bonhams' London jewellery sale on Wednesday, February 9 once again demonstrated the capital's passion for diamonds.

The 399-lot auction attracted plenty of interest with savvy collectors looking for that bargain investment.

As anticipated, the leading attraction of the Knightsbridge auction was lot 373, a diamond, single-stone ring. The size K ring holds a 5.11 carat marquise-cut diamond, set between brilliant-cut diamond shoulders. It was the top seller of the day and comfortably met its estimate of £15,000-25,000 with a solid price of £19,800.

A diamond negligeé pendant and
diamond cluster ring sold for £18,600

A pleasant surprise of the event was a diamond negligeé pendant and diamond cluster ring, from around 1910, which achieved £18,600. The negligeé pendant is set with a triangular mixed-cut brown diamond within a brilliant and single-cut diamond surround. The cluster ring is set in the centre with an old brilliant-cut diamond within a millegrain border of single-cut diamonds.

Another item to attract the bidders was a size J ½ gold hoop, with a single 3.65 carat diamond. The brilliant-cut round stone made £12,000, above its top end estimate of £11,000.

Although these pieces stole the headlines, many lesser items were also the subject of determined bidding, proving that you don't necessarily have to spend big to begin investing in jewellery.

The company's next jewellery auction takes place on February 16 in Oxford.
