Crystal Louis XIII magnum the star of weekend wine sales

A crystal magnum of Louis XIII cognac sold for $134,750 at Sotheby's New York last weekend.

The decanter was offered in a single lot sale.

The decanter is decorated with a map of the Americas

It's etched with a map of the Americas and contains 1.5 litres of a unique blend created by Baptiste Loiseau, the head of Remy Martin's cellar.

Three of the decanters were created in all, with the other two displaying maps of Europe and Asia. They will be sold on their respective continents later this year.

The proceeds will go to benefit Martin Scorsese's Film Foundation, which the director set up to preserve rare and vulnerable movies.

It was one of two September 9-10 wine auctions at Sotheby's; together they pulled in $4.9m.

The other sale featured selections from the cellar of management consultant John P Brincko.

The vast majority of the offerings consisted of wines from the Burgundy region - including 85 lots from the highly prized Domaine de la Romanee-Conti (DRC) vineyard.

The highlight was a 10 bottle set of 1985 DRC Montrachet, which realised $46,550, while a jeroboam of 1971 DRC La Tache made $31,850.

Connor Kriegel, head of Sotheby's wine department in New York, described Brincko as "a collector who used his incredible knowledge of iconic French wine producers to assemble one of America's great collections.

"Largely imported directly from producers by the collector himself and stored in custom-built storage, the wines on offer boast flawless provenance and condition."
