El Bulli wine auction to star Romanee-Conti 1999 at Sotheby's

Wines from one of the world's leading restaurants are coming to auction at Sotheby's.

More than 10,000 bottles from Spanish restaurant El Bulli will sell at an unspecified date, the auction house has revealed.

The three-starred Michelin eatery, which won the accolade of Restaurant magazine's best restaurant in the world on no less than five occasions, served its last plate in July 2011.

Famed for its wine as well as it's fine dining, the restaurant's cellar boasted a superb range of 1,600 different wines, with Burgundy and Bordeaux to the fore, in addition to many fine editions from Spain and California.

DRC Romanee-Conti 1999, available for €5,350 on the menu, is expected to head the lots, alongside Chateau Petrus 2000, which could be obtained for €3,745.

This is a great time to be investing in DRC, with Liv-ex's DRC Index up in value by 9.1% since July 2011 as Burgundy gains ground on Bordeaux.

DRC's Romanee Conti 2003 vintage has grown by 24% in 12 months, while the 2008 offering is up by 15%.

Christie's wine specialist Anthony Hanson recently dubbed Chateau Petrus the king of wine investments.

El Bulli became a victim of its own success, dealing with more than 2m reservation requests each year, and failing to make in a profit in its last years.

"We created a monster and it was time to find a way to tame it," said head chef Ferran Adria.

The restaurant is scheduled to reopen in 2014.

We will bring you full details on the auction as soon as they are in, so make sure you check back regularly.
