Henri Jayer Richebourg Grand Cru to make $10,000?

A single bottle of 1976 Henri Jayer Richebourg Grand Cru is expected to reach £6,000-7,500 ($7,686-9,608).

The lot is set to cross the block in Sotheby’s Burgundy and Beyond: Two Great Continental Collections auction in London on April 26.

Jayer Richebourg vineyard

The Richebourg vineyard is among Burgundy's best

Jayer was a legendary winemaker who worked the Richebourg vineyards between 1945 and 1987.

The wine he produced during that time sells at the very top end of the market.

In fact, it’s the most valuable wine in the world.

Single bottles sell for an average of almost $16,000 – significantly higher than Domaine de Romanee Conti Grand Cru (its closest competitor).

This is a less desirable vintage, but is still likely to attract a lot of attention from buyers.

Two bottles of 1995 Meo-Camuzet Richebourg will be offered with an estimate of £1,100-1,400 ($1,408-1,792).

The Meo-Camuzet estate took over the Richebourg vineyard from Jayer in 1987. Jayer remained on as an occasional consultant until he death in 2006, but the drop in price point indicates the value collectors place on his personal brand.

Serena Sutcliffe, honorary chairman of Sotheby’s wine, comments: “These are treasure-trove cellars as they contain so many wines that are extremely difficult to access, due to world-wide demand and relatively small vineyard holdings.”
