'Prince of landscape painting' leads Sotheby's sale

The first session of the 19th Century European Paintings and Modern & Contemporary Art sale, at Sotheby's in Amsterdam, saw a number of works sell for six figures, yesterday (December 15).

Chief among them was Dutch painter Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (Dutch, 1803-1862) - aka "the Prince of landscape painting" - whose Extensive Summer Landscape with Travellers on a Path sold way above its €150,000-200,000 estimate, commanding €300,750.

Just behind it was Jan Schoonhoven's (Dutch, 1914-1994) Rad 4. With an estimate of €100,000-150,000, its final hammer price was €222,750.

Another Koekkoek, this time Willem (Dutch, 1839-1895) more than doubled its €40,000-60,000 estimate. The oil on canvas Figures on a Quay in a Sunlit Town, possibly Haarlem, eventually sold for €132,750.

Bidders pushed an artwork of an entirely different style and provenance to fourth place: Yue Minjun's (Chinese, b. 1962) Hero Here.

Titled in Chinese and signed and dated 2004 on the reverse, Hero Here well exceeded its predicted €70,000-90,000, bringing an impressive €126,750.

In fifth was Leo Gestel's (Dutch, 1881-1941) The Flirtation (an Gestel and the Violinist Dirk Gootjes), surpassing its €40,000-60,000 pre-sale estimate at a value of €94,350.
