1956 Ferrari 250 GT coupe expected to realise $1.8m

A 1956 Ferrari 250 GT alloy coupe is expected to make $1.5m-1.8m ahead of a sale at Bonhams Scottsdale on January 28.

The coachwork was designed and built by Mario Felice Boano, one of 88 produced in his workshop.

Mario Boano built the coachwork for 88 Ferrari 250 GT coupes

Of these, 12 (including the present example) were built from alloy - primarily to appeal to amateur racing drivers.

Production of the model was taken over by another company in 1958, before being passed onto long-time Ferrari collaborator Pinin Farina.

It displays a number of crucial differences from these later coupes, including distinctive round foglamps.

The lot passed through the collections of several European owners before it was bought by the consignor and shipped to the US.

A lengthy restoration was carried out in 2014 before the car was entered in a number of high profile American road races, including the California Mille and the Colorado Grande 1,000.

Bonhams comments: "Beautifully prepared for top-tier exhibitions, this Boano coupe is sure to be welcomed at FCA corrals and marque events, as well as premium concour d'elegance.

"It is the living embodiment of la belle macchina, and it would make a brilliant addition to any collection."

Bonhams will also offer a 2015 McLaren P1 in the hotly anticipated sale.
