1967 Chevrolet COPO Corvette convertible to headline muscle car auction

A 1967 Chevrolet COPO Corvette convertible is the lead lot of Mecum Auctions' classic muscle car sale in Chicago on October 9-11.

COPO stands for Central Office Production Order and was a system that allowed dealers to order highly specialised versions of Chevrolets.

The 1967 Chevrolet COPO Corvette convertible features a unique colour combination

This encouraged the construction of various high-powered and heavily customised versions of the marque's stable.

This Corvette was outfitted with a 27/300 HP unit along with a silver exterior and a vinyl red interior - the only example of its kind in existence.

There is no estimate for the vehicle, although regular 1967 Corvettes sell for around $100,000 - a figure the car is more than likely to exceed.

A 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger R/T SE is another highlight.

The lot is one of only 59 R/T SE Challengers to feature the immensely powerful 426 Hemi engine, otherwise known by its satisfyingly apt nickname "The Elephant".

It has been professionally restored but features many of its original accoutrements, including the power windows.

Other exciting lots include a 1974 Chevrolet Nickey Camarro Stage III, the last car to be converted by Chicago's legendary Nickey Chevrolet dealership.

We have this superb racing jacket worn by actor and racing driver Paul Newman.
