A fire suit worn by Mario Andretti in his 1969 victory at the Indianapolis 500 has sold for $52,580.

The lot is part of a major collection of memorabilia from the legendary racetrack that crossed the block at Heritage Auctions in Dallas on June 18.

Mario Andretti is one of America's best racing drivers

Andretti is one of the greatest American drivers ever to take to the track, having secured major victories at home and abroad.

A pair of doors that hung over a garage in Gasoline Alley from the 1930s to the 1960s made $11,950.

Chris Ivy, director of sports auctions at Heritage, commented prior to the sale: "Little could be more evocative of the Indy 500 than these historically significant, vintage Indianapolis Motor Speedway doors.

"These hung at Garage #2 in the original Gasoline Alley area…what gearhead would not want this as a prize?"

Ivy went on to describe the collection, accumulated by a Dr Harlan Hunter, as "the most extensive of its kind in the world.

"For years, Dr. Hunter had access to the greatest drivers and race tracks in the world. In that time he amassed a deep and far-reaching collection of important race-used material."

We have a fascinating selection of memorabilia for sale.
