An original Beatles concert poster made £28,000 ($36,276) in an auction in Wales yesterday.
That’s a huge increase on the £8,000 ($10,349) estimate for this lot. It indicates the growing demand for Beatles memorabilia.
The poster belonged to Welsh folk singer Mary Hopkin
The poster was consigned from the collection of Mary Hopkin, a Welsh folk singer who was among the first acts the Beatles signed to their Apple label in 1968 (you may remember Mary from her 1968 hit single, Those Were the Days).
The show took place in the small seaside town of Llandudno in August 1963, soon after the release of Please Please Me.
Beatlemania was in the ascendant, but the band were still playing smaller venues.
By the following year, they would be jetting off to America to perform their game changing set on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Auctioneer Ben Rogers Jones of Rogers Jones & Co explained to local newspaper the Daily Post: “It was right that the poster should be delivered to our auction rooms in Colwyn Bay, only three miles from the venue where The Beatles played that night.
“…the market for Beatles memorabilia is colossal…
“Original and rare items like these are collected around the globe.”
